JEWISH WEDDING CEREMONY

(CHANT:) *MAY AHDEAR AHL HAKOLE

          MAY BOROOCH AHL HAKOLE

          MAY GOHDOLE AHL HAKOLE

          HOO YIVORAYCH CHOOSEN V'KALOH...

We are joyfully assembled today to witness and to celebrate the joining

of two lives in marriage.

[The chupah beneath which GROOM and BRIDE are standing represents the

special chamber the chussen once provided for his kaleh on their wedding

day.

Today the chupah is symbolic of GROOM and BRIDE's future home, where

their life together will begin.

The chupah's four posts represent support from friends and community.

The sides must remain open signifying that although their home is to be

a private domain, obligations to the community exist.

The chuppah also is a symbol of our forefathers whose tents always were

open in hospitality; this openness implies no secrets within the union.]

[Lei Exchange]

A Hawaiian wedding often begins with the exchange of Leis. We do this

for several different reasons.  One is that the Lei is an unbroken

circle, like the rings that will soon be exchanged, representing the

eternal commitment and devotion of GROOM and BRIDE's hearts to each other.

Also, each individual flower that is woven into the Lei loses none of

its individual beauty when it forms the circle. In fact, its beauty

becomes enhanced.  Likewise in BRIDE and GROOM's marriage there will be

no compromise or loss of individual identity or unique beauty.  In fact,

because of the nurturing care and support of BRIDE and GROOM's

relationship, each will grow even more fully into that special

individual with whom each has fallen in love.]

E LEI KAU, E LEI HO'OILO IKE ALOHA

Love is worn like a lei through summers and winters; that is, love lasts

forever...

GROOM and BRIDE have asked us to be with them and to rejoice with them

in the making of this most important commitment.

The essence of this commitment is the acceptance of another person in

his or her entirety as lover, companion and friend.

It is therefore a decision that is not entered into lightly, but rather

undertaken with great consideration and respect.

GROOM and BRIDE have come together in the hope that the love which

brought them to this union may go out beyond itself into the lives of

others.

Yet, they know it is not easy to build a deep, personal

relationship--even in marriage.

Thus, we ask that the promise and hopes of this union be realized.

Grant these two the patience to listen, the capacity to understand, the

compassion to give comfort, and the joy to laugh and to be.

Let their marriage make a home where neither person is a stranger.

Let it offer illumination and growth.

Let it bask in the joy of giving and the excitement of shared discoveries.

Let it be large enough to endure the darkness of things.

May silence and despair never separate them.

May they always return to each other.

[The wine which GROOM and BRIDE will now share symbolizes their coming

union. They are about to drink from the same cup in the manner in which

they'll share sustenance for the remainder of their lives.]

GROOM SIPS FROM GOBLET OF WINE AND PRAYS:

*BOROOCH ATOH ADONOI, ELOHAYNU MELECH HOH'OLOM; BORAY P'REE HAGOFFEN.

THEN BRIDE SIPS FROM THE SINGLE GOBLET AND PRAYS:

*BOROOCH ATOH ADONOI, ELOHAYNU MELECH HOH'OLOM; BORAY P'REE HAGOFFEN.

GROOM and BRIDE please hold hands and repeat after me:

"I, GROOM take you BRIDE to be my wife and equal, to share my life

openly with you and to strive to love, honor and stand beside you

always--in times of celebration and in times of sadness; in times of

sickness and in times of health; in times of joy and times of conflict."

"I, BRIDE take you GROOM to be my husband and equal, to share my life

openly with you and to strive to love, honor and stand beside you

always--in times of celebration and in times of sadness; in times of

sickness and in times of health; in times of joy and times of conflict."

GROOM SIPS FROM GOBLET OF WINE AND PRAYS:

THEN BRIDE SIPS FROM THE SINGLE GOBLET AND PRAYS:

*BOROOCH ATOH ADONOI, ELOHAYNU MELECH HOH'OLOM; BORAY P'REE HAGOFFEN.

GROOM and BRIDE will now exchange rings.

A circle is the symbol of the sun, the earth, the universe. Of wholeness

and life; of peace and of unity.

Like circles your rings have no beginning and no ending.

They are tokens of the growing relationship you have come here to

celebrate and confirm.

Eternal Spirit fill these rings with the light of love, compassion and

peace.

GROOM, place the ring on BRIDE's right hand index finger and pray:

*HAHRAY ATOH M'KOODESHET LEE B'TABAAT ZO KEDAT MOSHE V'YISSROALE.

Then transfer the ring to BRIDE's left hand, ring finger, GROOM, and

promise:

"With this ring I pledge all that I am and all that I can be to you."

BRIDE, place the ring on GROOM's right hand index finger and pray:

*HAHRAY AHT M'KOODESHET LEE B'TABAAT ZO KEDAT MOSHE V'YISSROALE.

Then transfer the ring to GROOM's left hand, ring finger, BRIDE, and

promise:

"With this ring I pledge all that I am and all that I can be to you."

You have joined together and together you shall go forth.

But, let there be spaces in your togetherness and let the winds of

heaven dance between you.

Love each other but make not a shackle of that love; rather, let it be a

moving sea between the shores of your souls.

Fill each other's cups, share each other's bread.

Sing and dance together and be joyous.

But let each of you stand on your own, even as the strings of a guitar

are alone though they vibrate and quiver with the same music.

Give your hearts but not into each other's keeping; for only the hand of

life can contain your hearts.

Stand together, yet not too near together,

For the pillars of the temple stand apart and the palm and the koa trees

grow not in each others shadow.

But do not try to become each other.

For the beauty of your uniqueness will nourish and sustain each of you

for a lifetime.

In the name of The Eternal Spirit and with the blessings of all

assembled here, I now declare you to be husband and wife: partners in life.

God Bless You Both!
